Meinl (pronounced my-null), the Viennese coffee giant, has opened its first U.S.
"Vienna Kaffeehaus" in Wrigleyville. The tidy cafe features standard coffees plus
specialties brews, including the Vienna ice cream coffee (vanilla ice cream with
espresso and whipped cream), more than 20 loose-leaf teas, and plenty of house-made
pastries, cakes and strudels. The coffee, tea, chocolate and preserves are imported
directly from the Meinl plant in Vienna. The pastry case displays daily selections
(breakfast fare in the mornings and desserts later in the day), or you can order
such made-to-order treats as the mohrim hemd, a hot, molten-center cake with warm
chocolate sauce. Several sandwiches are available, including the Tyrolean ham
and the roasted turkey with Gouda. A soup and salad combination is also offered.

"The
desserts were to die for!
I just wish that they were open a tad later for
my dessert cravings.
I love how they serve the coffee in fine china on a
silver platter."
